Top Reasons Your Brakes Should Never Be Ignored

Brake Inspection

“We want to make sure you can stop safely before you go anywhere,” says our own Robert Ohlmann, the third generation owner of Tony’s Brake & Alignment here in Louisville, KY. Whether brakes, alignments, tires or other auto repair, our team of ASE-certified auto mechanics cares about customers’ safety and delivering honest, ethical customer service. Read the reviews of customers form Shepherdsville, Shelbyville, and other communities near our Louisville location, or chat with your fellow neighbors when you visit our shop. It’s what we do.

Having adequate braking force when and where you need it is critical. Designed to enable you to safely slow or stop your vehicle, modern brake systems involve a complex array of parts, sensors and fluids, connected and controlled by a mix of mechanical, electronic and hydraulic means. When a driver pushes on the brake pedal, that action exerts pressure that moves a piston inside the master brake cylinder, which forces brake fluid through the brake lines and flexible hoses to brake calipers and wheel cylinders. Once there, brake pads or brake shoes lined with friction materials then press against brake disc or drums respectively. That pressure slows the wheel rotation, and once the brake pedal is released, the braking force ceases as the fluid returns back to the master cylinder.

As the driver, you will likely be the first to notice warning signs and events that indicate brake service is needed:

  • Do you hear a scraping, squeaking or grinding noise emanating from the brakes at any time?
  • Does the brake pedal feel spongy when depressed?
  • Does your vehicle pull to one side or the other when braking?
  • Has your vehicle recently struck a pothole, hit a curb, or run over an object?
  • Has your brake warning light in your dashboard illuminates and stayed on anytime since the vehicles last service?

Tony’s Brake & Alignment want to be your trusted auto repair partner. Our “know-how” is the result of annual cutting-edge training and real-world experience servicing and repairing all makes and models of light-duty passenger cars, SUVs, and trucks here in Louisville. In addition, our wheelhouse includes the expertise to service brake systems on larger vehicles — such as RVs, buses, and fleet vehicles — as well as medium- and heavy-duty work trucks. We even service classic cars.

Our professional auto mechanics at Tony’s Brake & Alignment understand brake system complexity, vehicle-specific diagnostics, and proper testing procedures. For instance, did you know that brake fluid is “hygroscopic,” meaning that it absorbs water easily, which can cause a spongy pedal and brake fade? Watch this video below to see what we look for, and why that expertise benefits you.
